Waheed Qasemi

Waheed Qasemi is a singer, composer and researcher of Afghan folk music, and he belongs to the tradition at the centre of this catalogue: Kharabat, the musicians' quarter of Kabul's old city. Wikipedia's account of the quarter names him — as Qasem Jo — among the sons and daughters of Kharabat musicians who came back after 2001 to rebuild the community the wars had scattered. That is the same lineage that produced Ustad Natu, Rahim Bakhsh, the rubab master Mohammad Omar and Ghulam Dastagir Shaida, whose recordings are also here. By his own account in interviews, he was born in Kabul around 1960 and has worked as a singer and composer since 1977 — which places the start of his career in the last years before the music of Kabul was broken up by war and exile. Since 2002 he has also worked as a researcher, documenting the indigenous and folk music of his own region rather than only performing it, and he has spoken publicly about how patriarchy and Taliban-era attitudes have kept Afghan women out of cultural life.
