Sima Taranah

Seema Tarana is an Afghan singer originally from Parwan province, north of Kabul, though some accounts give Kabul itself. She plays tabla as well as singing. Her audience has never been confined to Afghanistan: she is well known in Tajikistan too, where the shared Persian language carries Afghan music directly. She has worked with other Afghan artists abroad, among them the singer Vahid Soroor, and she now lives in Canada, part of the large community of Afghan musicians who rebuilt their careers in North America. Almost nothing has been published about her in English — no birth date, no discography, no account of how she started. That is an unusually thin record for a singer with a catalogue this size, and it reflects how little of Afghan music history has been written down rather than anything about her standing. We would rather leave this page short than fill it with guesses. If you know her work, please tell us about it.
