Shahla Zaland

Shahla Zaland has been performing since 1990, and she belongs to the most prominent musical family in Afghan music. Her father was Ustad Jalil Zaland (c. 1935–2009), a singer and composer of Afghanistan's golden era and one of its genuine architects: he helped form Radio Afghanistan's first band, composed several of the country's national anthems, and wrote “Man Amadeam”, the song the Iranian singer Googoosh made famous. His melodies carried well beyond Afghanistan, into Iran and Tajikistan. Her brother Farid Zaland, born in Kabul in 1949, became a composer and songwriter who has worked extensively with Iranian musicians. Her siblings Wahid Zaland and Soheila Zaland are also singers; Wahid's recordings are on this site too. Shahla has performed live alongside leading Persian-language singers, including Leila Forouhar. Her catalogue here is modest in size and worth hearing against her father's — the family resemblance in phrasing is the interesting part.
