Salma Rahim Jahani

Salma Jahani was born in Kabul on 27 November 1952 and is one of the women who established a place for female singers on Afghan television. She is married to the singer Rahim Jahani. Her clearest claim on the repertoire is a specific one: she was the first singer to perform “Bia Ke Berem ba Mazar” on Afghan national television. That song has since become one of the most widely covered pieces in Afghan music, and several other artists' versions of it sit elsewhere in this catalogue — which makes her recording the origin point of something listeners here will already know. One note on how this collection is filed: the material is held under a name that combines hers with her husband's, so it may include recordings by both of them rather than by her alone. We would rather say so than present an uncertain attribution as a clean one.
