Qader Eshpari
Qader Eshpari is an Afghan-American singer and composer born near Kabul in the mid-1970s. His family left Afghanistan before the war, moving first to Pakistan, then Germany, then the United States; he finished high school in Las Vegas, took a computer science degree in California, and spent about three years as a technical support engineer at IBM before going back to music. He has recorded since 1996, in pop and soft rock, often including renditions of popular Indian film songs — a long-standing strand in Afghan popular music. His albums run from Soroode Asheqi (1996) through Sabrina (1997), Sia Moo (1998), Only You (2001), Sahil Eshq (2003) and Naazi Jaan (2005) to Generation X (2009). The English-language track "Dance with Me" and the video "Ashiana", released on DVD in 2007, are among his better-known pieces. His influence runs wider than his own discography: he is credited with writing or arranging music for more than a hundred albums by other Afghan singers, which makes him as much a producer of this era's sound as a performer in it. In November 2005 he returned to Afghanistan for the first time in twenty-five years and gave a concert at Kabul's Ghazi Stadium. He lives in Fremont, California.
