Obaid Juenda
Obaid Juenda is an Afghan singer who became familiar to a far wider audience through television. He was a judge on Afghan Star, TOLO's talent contest and for fifteen years the most-watched programme in the country, and a coach on its spin-off Superstar — in the second season, which ran as a battle format with two coaches, Juenda and Qais Ulfat, both finalists came from his team. Ulfat is also in this catalogue. Speaking to VOA in 2017, by then living in London, he gave a plain account of what was happening to the show he helped judge: the proportion of women auditioning had fallen to roughly five per cent. Afghan Star ended in 2021, when the Taliban returned and music was banned. Little has been published in English about his own recording career, his background or his training, which is a common gap for Afghan musicians of his generation and no reflection of how well known he is. His songs here speak for themselves. If you can add to this, please write to us.
