Nasrat Sharqi

Nasrat Sharqi became one of the most influential Afghan musicians working in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s — a period when the centre of gravity of Afghan music had moved almost entirely outside the country, and when the diaspora concert circuit was where a career was actually made. He started performing young. He was educated in Kabul at the Lycée Istiqlal, the French lycée, and later studied at Ankara University in Turkey — an unusually international path for an Afghan musician of his generation, and audible in material that sits apart from both the radio-orchestra sound and the folk repertoire. He has not recorded in recent years. The published sources on him are thin for someone of his standing in the diaspora, so this biography is shorter than it should be; if you have reliable detail about his career, please write to us.
