Nasrat Parsa

Nasrat Ali Parsa was born in Kabul on 22 February 1968 and sang from 1987 until his death. He worked across soft rock, pop, ghazal and classical forms, played tabla and harmonium, and recorded for Ariana Records and Negah Entertainment. Like most Afghan musicians of his generation he built his career in exile, based in Hamburg and touring from there. His death was senseless and public. On 7 May 2005 he performed in Vancouver at a Mother's Day concert opening a North American tour. Afterwards, outside his hotel with his brother Najib, three young men approached asking for an autograph and a photograph. One of them, a nineteen-year-old, punched him; he lost his balance and fell onto concrete steps. He died of his head injuries the following day, aged 37. Reporting at the time said the assailant was angry that Parsa had sung ghazals rather than faster mast numbers. The man was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to two years of house arrest and three years' probation. He was at the height of his powers, and the recordings here are nearly all from the exile years in Germany that made up the second half of his working life.
