Nashenas
Nashenas — born Sadiq Fitrat Habibi in Kandahar in 1935, into a Kakar Pashtun family — is among the last living links to the golden age of Afghan radio. Part of his childhood was spent in British India, where he absorbed the ghazal tradition and learned Urdu, an influence that stayed with him; he is often called "the Afghan Saigal" after the Indian singer K. L. Saigal. The name is itself part of the story. When the first invitations came to sing on the radio, singing publicly was not considered respectable for a family of his standing, so he took the pseudonym Nashenas — "unknown". He has recorded under it ever since. His fame dates from the late 1950s, and across the decades he has recorded in Pashto, Dari and Urdu. He also holds a doctorate in Pashto literature, earned in Moscow. His work reached new listeners in 2022 through Life Is a Heavy Burden, a compilation issued by the Strut label, and in October 2023, at 88, he gave his first public performance in two decades, in the Netherlands.
