Naghma
Naghma is one of the best-known Pashto singers Afghanistan has produced, with a career spanning four decades and a repertoire built largely on folk and romantic song. She was born in Kandahar — Wikipedia gives 23 April 1954, though other sources differ — and moved to Kabul, where she auditioned for Radio Afghanistan and was accepted. She is inseparable in most listeners' memory from Mangal, the singer from Laghman she performed with and married. Together they became one of the most recognisable duos in Afghan music, and much of the material still circulating under either name comes from that partnership. The two divorced in 2006. Like most Afghan musicians of her generation she left as civil war closed in, living for years in Pakistan, where in 2013 she received the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz and the Pride of Performance — unusual recognition for an Afghan artist from the Pakistani state. She has since settled in the United States and continues to perform. Sources disagree on her birth year and on exactly when she began recording.
