Mukhtar Majid
Mukhtar Majid (1962–2022) was one of the five founders of Baran, the band formed in Kabul in the 1980s that became one of the most popular Afghan groups of its era. The others were Farhad Darya, Asad Badie, Wahid Saberi and Javed Rahi; most of them are also on this site, and the overlap in their catalogues is not a coincidence. He left Afghanistan, as nearly every musician of that generation did, and settled in the United States. He died in February 2022 in Virginia, after a period of illness — he had been treating cancer. His recordings here span the Kabul years and the decades after them. Anyone who can help date individual tracks, or who holds material from the Baran period that is missing from this catalogue, is welcome to get in touch.
