Mozdah Jamalzada

Mozhdah Jamalzadah is an Afghan-Canadian singer, broadcaster and activist, born in Kabul on 7 December 1985. Her family fled to Pakistan during the civil war when she was about five and resettled in Canada; she grew up in Vancouver, studied broadcast journalism at BCIT and philosophy and political science at UBC. Her father Bashir wrote "Dokhtare Afghan", the song that became hers. She began releasing music in 2007 and put out the album Act One in 2009, working in pop and Afghan folk forms. "Dokhtare Afghan" and "Watan" are her best-known recordings. Her larger impact was on television. She joined the Afghan channel 1TV in December 2009 and hosted The Mozhdah Show, which took on subjects Afghan broadcasting avoided — women's rights above all. CNN and Time called her the Oprah of Afghanistan. She presented Afghan Star in 2012 and 2013. She is reported to be the first woman to perform in post-2001 Afghanistan without a hijab, and in 2010 she was invited to perform at the White House on International Women's Day. She won ATN Awards in 2010 and 2012, acted in the 2019 film Red Snow, and is the subject of Roberta Staley's 2019 biography Voice of Rebellion.
