Mangal

Mangal is an Afghan singer from Laghman province who has performed since around 1980 in both Pashto and Dari, working in folk and pop. He records for Afghan Vision Records and Ariana Records. He is best known as one half of the duo he formed with Naghma, whom he married. Together they were among the most popular acts in Afghan music, and their career traces the geography of Afghan exile exactly: out of Afghanistan to Dubai during the civil war, to Pakistan in 1992, where they found a large audience among Afghan refugees, and then to the United States in the late 1990s, performing for the Afghan-American community in northern California. The marriage ended in divorce. He has four children, has remarried, and lives in California, where he performs solo at private events and on television. Much of his repertoire is explicitly patriotic — he has dedicated many songs to Afghanistan — and his audience spans Afghanistan, Pashtun areas of Pakistan and the diaspora in between. Naghma's own recordings are in this catalogue too, so the duet material can be found on either page.
