Hangama
Hangama was born Zuhra in Kabul in 1960; her mother chose the stage name when she started singing. She began performing in 1975, around the age of fifteen, and trained under the master Ustad Nainawaz. She sings pop, classical forms and ghazals. From the late 1970s into the mid-1980s she was one half of the most recognisable duo in Afghan music, singing with Ahmad Wali — also in this catalogue — whom she later married. Their recordings together, including the songs they performed for the Sarandoy, are still treated as classics of the period, and it is largely on those duets that her reputation rests. She left Afghanistan for Germany in 1985 and married Wali there; their son Massieh was born the following year. She returned to Afghanistan in 2005 to give concerts in Mazar-i-Sharif and Kabul, two decades after leaving. In 2008 she won the ATN Award for Best Female Singer, in a year when she was also nominated for a Noor TV award. Her work is a reminder that Afghan pop of the late 1970s was not only a men's field; she was one of the small number of women whose voices defined it.
