Gul Zaman

Gul Zaman was an Afghan folk singer and producer from Paktia province in eastern Afghanistan, and one of the best-known Pashto voices of his generation. He died in February 2022 at the age of 82, which places his birth around 1940 — the generation that came up through Afghan radio and whose recordings form the backbone of the Pashto folk repertoire. Pajhwok Afghan News reported his death, describing him as a renowned singer; the detailed obituaries that a career of that length deserves have largely not been written in English. His name is a common one and belongs to several other people, which makes him unusually hard to research from outside Afghanistan. What survives plainly is the music, and the recordings gathered here are the substance of what he left. If you knew him, or know his work well, we would be glad to hear from you — there is more to say about him than the sources currently allow.
