Farzana Naaz
Farzana Naz is an Afghan singer born in Baghlan province who has recorded since 2008, mainly in Pashto — her father is Pashtun, her mother a Dari speaker — across pop and Afghan folk forms. She started out in Pakistan, recording her first songs there because conditions in Afghanistan made it impractical, and worked part-time as a singer in Peshawar. Wider recognition came through the Pashto entertainment channels Shamshad TV and Khaybar. "Paighla De Kabul" was the biggest hit in Afghanistan in 2010 and remains the song she is identified with; "Shamal" was also well received. In July 2021 she contributed a track to the Afghani Tadka album, distributed by Zee Music. Her largest concert, in Lashkar Gah in Helmand, drew around twelve thousand people — and the aftermath says a great deal about what it has cost Afghan women to perform in public. Local officials praised the event, but the deputy governor was dismissed afterwards when tribal leaders objected to a woman appearing on stage without a headscarf. She is one of the relatively few women to have built a career singing principally in Pashto rather than Dari.
