Faiz Karizi
Faiz Karizi was born in 1953 in Kar-e Zamin, on the edge of Kabul, and is one of the defining voices of Afghan folk music — often given the title king of folklore. He came to national attention in the late 1970s through performances on Afghan national television, and through the 1980s he was a household name, working in the mahali and folk repertoire rather than the classical material that dominated the radio orchestra. Like most musicians of his generation, he left. He spent a period in Peshawar, Pakistan, before settling in Sweden around 2001, and he went on recording and touring from exile — albums such as Wasl (2008) belong to those years, and singles have appeared under his name as recently as 2023. His catalogue here is one of the larger ones on Sandar, and it is drawn mostly from the archive rather than from his later releases.
