Aziz Herawi

Aziz Herawi was an instrumentalist, not a singer, and one of the great Afghan players of the dutar and rubab. He was born in 1952 in Herat, the city near the Iranian border whose musical character shaped everything he played. He came to music almost entirely on his own. At around seven he got hold of a twelve-stringed dutar through a family servant and practised alone at night in the woods near his home — he was essentially self-taught. What he developed was a style that sits exactly where Herat sits: Persian and Hindustani instruments and idioms held together in one music, which is the city's own tradition rather than a fusion he invented. He left Afghanistan and lived in northern California from 1985, recording several albums there and becoming one of the best-known Afghan instrumentalists working in the United States. He died on 29 January 2011, aged 58 or 59, in Herat, while visiting family. The recordings here are instrumental pieces rather than songs, and his bucket holds no photograph of him — which is why this page shows our default artwork.
