Asad Badie
Asad Badie belongs to the generation that made Afghan pop in the years just before the country's long war. Born in Herat in about 1961, he began performing in 1980 and, in the early 1980s, was a member of Goroh-e-Baran — the Rain Band — alongside Farhad Darya, Mukhtar Majid and Wahid Saberi, all three of whom also appear in this catalogue. He was known as much for his voice as for his looks, and the band was among the most visible acts of its moment. The band's members emigrated through the 1990s and went separate ways; Darya became the best-known solo name to come out of it. Badie took a different path. He qualified as a doctor in Geneva and practises as a psychiatrist, which is the main reason his output as a singer thinned after the band years rather than any loss of audience. He lives between Switzerland and Austria, where he still produces music and performs concerts in European cities, often for charity. His recordings from the Goroh-e-Baran period remain the ones listeners return to, and they sit here alongside the work of his former bandmates.
