Akbar Nikzad
Akbar Nikzad (born June 1966, died 29 March 2021) was among the better-known Afghan singers of the late radio-and-television era. He grew up in Kabul, completed school there, and studied Persian language and literature at Kabul University while already performing. His songs were broadcast on Afghan national radio and television through the 1980s and into the 1990s, and the one most listeners name first is “Lotf-e Yar Shoda Kam”. He emigrated to Germany in the mid-1990s, at the height of the civil war. He said later that the circumstances of those first years in exile made it impossible to keep working as a musician, and that he only returned to it afterwards — releasing albums including Khosrow-e Khuban, Maqam-e Sabr and Mast-e Naz. He wrote most of his own material and composed for other singers as well. As a young man, by his own account, he followed Nashenas closely before deciding to find a style of his own. In a 2017 interview with the BBC he said what he wanted was enough security in Afghanistan to go home and perform for people there. He died in Germany in 2021, aged 55, of COVID-19, and was survived by his wife and two children.
